Support for TG16 encrypted game images [message #154] | Sat, 21 January 2006 14:29

Apparently, Mednafen is missing support for TG16 encrypted game images. According with this discussion at MESS message board... http://www.bannister.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=002701;p=3 ... japanese PCE games are not encrypted, but US TG16 games are encrypted and you actually needed a converter to play Japanese PCE games on a US TG16, so the US console required the carts to be encrypted. The encryption method is just some data line swapping. Here is the link to CVS commit done to MESS code to implement support for encrypted games (and also cleaned up the MESS cartridge image reading code): http://cvs.mess.org:6502/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/mess/machine/pce.c.diff?r1=1.22&r2=1.23 I don't have the knowledge to say if MESS team is right, but I hope this can help... They're not encrypted, just the data lines are swapped around on HuCards so that US and Japanese games aren't interchangeable. I won't add support for this bit-swapping, since the images already should have had this done to them when they were dumped if they were dumped by hardware wired for PC Engine HuCards.

I understand. For people looking for help: actually, bit-swapped ("encrypted") HuCards need to be converted to run on Mednafen. The convertion can be done by the "-decrypt" command of pcetoy32: http://download.consolemul.com/Utils/PCEngine/PCEToy32_10.zip

The so called encrypted Usa hucard dumps are nothing but bad dumps. Japanese and Usa hardware/hucard have their pins inverted. So you can't use Japanese games on an American system or Usa games on a Japanese system. (unless using a converter such as Dave Shadoff's Kisado). "Encrypted/bitswapped" dumps of American Hucards simply have been faulty made using a dumper that had its pins layout in the Japanese order , hence the inversion. http://x.or.internet.free.fr/forums/showthread.php?t=262 Necstasy PC-Engine & PC-FX TOC database http://www.necstasy.net
