PSX BIOS ROMs [message #2557] Fri, 01 June 2012 17:52 Go to next message

I think the NA BIOS ROM for SCPH-7003 is exactly the same as SCPH-5501's (check the BIOS version of the two models, they match), as the dump I have has the same SHA1 hash as that of SCPH-5501. So, if possible, adding that as a file name option (scph7003.bin) might help usability a bit. For now, it's very simple to rename the SCPH-7003 ROM to scph5501.bin; maybe you could make a note to do this in the documentation, if having multiple ROMs available for each regional system proves to be a difficult implementation problem. It might make sense to add it as a JP BIOS ROM option, as that's its usage in the SCPH-7003.

As an aside, I'd like to commend you on your efforts to create a more accurate PSX emulator, much like the seemingly dead pSX. I've never liked all the plugin nonsense with the alternatives. The fact that Mednafen is, AFAIK, the only no-plugin PSX emulator with native 64-bit support, and being open source as well, tops it all off. And even in its alpha state, it's still quite competent for playing actual games...

Thanks for the heads up. I seemed to be missing scph5501.bin so it's good to know they're probably identical. Smile

And not actually related to the topic at hand, but I'll have to +1 on the effort of getting a plugin-less Playstation emulator. pSX was promising, but unfortunately the author was too stuck up to ever release the source, which means that it's a waste that it's no longer being developed. I see a good future for this emulation core.

This happens to every closed source emulator. You'll notice the only ones still alive are open source. People always lose interest and stop development for years at a time, sometimes forever. If it's open source someone else usually picks it up. Indeed, it is very unfortunate that all the work done in pSX has been essentially lost.

I wonder when someone will pick up Yabause Razz

IMO, if someone can't write an emulator from scratch, he won't be able to SIGNIFICANTLY improve an abandoned emulator Rolling Eyes

The only real use of a semi-dead open source emulator is the incorporation into Mednafen code Twisted Evil

Here's something interesting: the SHA1hash may be the same, but I can't get scph5002.bin to work for any of my PAL games. (NTSC-based games do work.) This message shows up:

http://davince.tengudev.com/images/2012/videomismatch.png

The command I'm trying to use is as follows:
mednafen -loadcd psx

I'm compiling and using Mednafen from the AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44444

Some relevant settings in the config:
psx.region_autodetect 1
psx.region_default jp

Changing the region default to eu and/or disabling the region autodetect has no effect whatsoever.

Not sure if this is a Mednafen bug or if the BIOS is really not usable for PAL games.

you must have all three psx bios specified in the mednafen documentation, inside mednafen firmware folder and leave the option psx.region_autodetect to 1.

Well, that's the thing. I have all three BIOSes stated in the config file (with the right capitalization), and like I said, changing the region settings does nothing for me.

Edit: if this helps:
[vincent@vincent-arch firmware]$ sha1sum *

Set psx.region_autodetect to 0 and select your favorite region.
For me the option psx.region_autodetect to 1 has always worked.

This means I also already tried region_autodetect 0 + region_default eu. It makes no difference; I just get that big green message which I think might be from the BIOS.

Can you verify if my SHA1sums are correct by comparing with your own BIOS files?

Okay, so it seems I might have an scph5502 that's probably not actually an scph5502, and it's just not working, or not compatible. I'll look for a different one, thanks for the help.

Edit: unless you dumped those files yourself? I can't dump them, so I have to look for them otherwise and all the versions I find have the sha1sum of f8de9325fc36fcfa4b29124d291c9251094f2e54.
Edit 2: managed to get it working with an SCPH7003 BIOS. The BIOS still gives me the green message, but I can actually hear the PSX's boot sound and then it properly launches the game.

I too got everything working by just renaming the SCPH7003.BIN bios since its sha sum was an exact match for the North America version. Running games is perfectly fine.

For EU games I found this bios matched the sha1sum

SCPH7502 works fine for European games.
