If you could have your pick of one of the systems not yet emulated in Mednafen to be included next, which would you choose? [Updated on: Sun, 08 May 2022 15:54]

My first choice (and vote) is PS2. Reason 1: The library of good to great games for this console is large. Reason 2: (If development in other project codebases translates to Mednafen development) "Playable" compatibility, according to PCSX2's site, is almost 100% (97.9% as of April, 2021). Reason 3: Mednafen's approach to emulation is best. I have years of experience with this emulator and in that time it has been very stable and accurate (compared to other software emulation). Other emulators (not much choice for PS2) consistently break in some way or another. A Mednafen adaptation and addition is needed here. My second and third choices are GameCube and Wii. Reasoning is much the same for those. Fourth choice and beyond is more difficult. Compatibility in PPSSPP and various DS projects is also high, and libraries of good/great games also large. A Mednafen translation of these portable consoles would be welcome. Any addition from this list would be exciting, and again, thank you to the devs and all who worked, are working, or will work on video games (and free, open source software). I think N64 is realistic and possible, and it would be really really nice to have in mednafen IMO. Only real catch is that there isn't any N64 emulation out there that is decently accurately, especially graphically ("Enhanced HD Graphics" by shitting out DirectX/OpenGL native rendering 🤢), but it'd still be convienent to have. It could also be a N64 original core, but that'd be many years off before Admin would even begin on it since they are still very busy with Saturn it seems (and thats under the assumption Admin would even care to do it. They do this all for free and what is already here is damn fine and worthy piece of software). Really tho, I don't really see any new cores popping up super soon, mednafen is already a beefy package in what it supports. Also I just wanna say a lot of the systems you put there are defs wishful thinking. DC, GC, PS2, Wii could be added, but those are such complex systems that it just wouldn't even be worth the time to port Dolphin, PCSX2, NullDC, etc to a mednafen core when it'd be better for the end user all around to go get those emulators themselves. Xbox, 360, PS3, Wii U are all still very much WIPs that are only good enough for some people for some games, and also wouldn't be worth the effort to make part of mednafen honestly. If you want an all in one for these systems, honestly RetroArch is probably more ideal, NGL. (I personally think RetroArch is a gaint headache for no good reason, but thats just IMO ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ she/her Use my mednafen servers? Most of these systems already have good quality emulators. Sega CD/32X - Kega PS2 - PCSX2 Xbox - xemu Mednafen cannot add much value there. Instead, look at systems with weak offerings, specifically the Nintendo 64. The two leading N64 emulators, Project 64 and m64p, are both plagued with problems. Resource-intensive, no GUI, poor accuracy, etc. There is a lot of space for mednafen to lead N64 emulation.

Kega = Fusion? Fusion isn't a real emulator, it is full of per-game hacks with a built-in db of cart checksums, many games won't work if you alter their contents and checksums. PCSX2 also needs hacks to run certain games + uses HLE.

For those interested in evaluating, or who are new to Mednafen or emulating, links and a list of some WIP non-multi-core and multi-core emulation/recreation projects relating to the poll entries in this thread are here, with terminology and compatibility %s from respective sources (if dev testing is presented and organized). The compatibility data is not based on my usage. I suggest it as a loose reference; it may be out of date, incorrect, and performance can differ from one setup to the next, or from one build to another: DOS/Various Computers • DOSBox --- Supported: 91.38%, Playable: 3.71% | Tested: 1241 • DOSBox-X --- Games Passed: 80.85% | Tested: 491 | Demoscene Passed: 94.62% | Tested: 3981 • 86Box • PCem • *MiSTer FPGA Arcade • MAME • *MiSTer FPGA Neo Geo • MAME • FBNeo • ares --- Working: 0% | Tested: 233 • *MiSTer FPGA Sega CD/32X • ares --- Working Sega CD: 100% | Tested: 6 | Working 32X: 49.12% | Tested: 57 • Genesis Plus GX • PicoDrive • *MiSTer FPGA N64 • ares --- Working: 90.88% | Tested: 351 • Mupen64Plus --- Great: 66.10% | Tested: 59 • cen64 Dreamcast • Flycast PS2 • PCSX2 --- Perfect: 0.97%, Playable: 98.03% | Tested: 2691 GameCube and Wii • Dolphin --- Perfect: 36.3%, Playable: 60.6% | Tested: 3066 Xbox • xemu --- Perfect: 2%, Playable: 63% | Tested: 1024 NDS • DeSmuME • melonDS PSP • PPSSPP Xbox 360 • xenia --- Playable: 18.05% | Tested: 1518 PS3 • RPCS3 --- Playable: 65.04% | Tested: 3198 3DS • Citra --- Perfect: 30.24%, Great: 32.65% | Tested: 539 Vita • Vita3K --- Playable: 10.34% | Tested: 561 Wii U (561 tested) • Cemu --- Perfect: 13%, Playable: 37% | Tested: 1207 Switch • Ryujinx --- Playable: 69.9% | Tested: 3518 • yuzu --- Perfect: 23.88%, Great: 30.22% | Tested: 2684 (* = particular hardware and software required.)
