Add Gameshark Code missing in GBA games [message #6837] Sat, 28 January 2023 15:25 Go to next message

When running Gameboy Advance games, pressing Alt+C to bring up the cheat menu is limited to these options:

1) List Cheats
2) Cheat Search...
D) Display menu

There is no option for "Add Gameshark/Game Genie Code" which is present on NES, SNES, GBC, etc.

I searched around and couldn't find anything specific in the documentation or on the web explaining why the option to add Gameshark codes is missing from GBA emulation.

Version info

Starting Mednafen 1.22.2
 Build information:
   Compiled with gcc 9.3.0
Compiled against zlib 1.2.11, running with zlib 1.2.11(flags=0x000000a9)
Compiled against SDL 2.0.10(hg-12952:bc90ce38f1e2), running with SDL 2.0.10(hg-12952:bc90ce38f1e2)
   Running with libsndfile-1.0.28
 Base directory: /home/dbb/.mednafen
Emulation modules: apple2 nes snes gb gba pce lynx md pcfx ngp psx ss ssfplay vb wswan sms gg snes_faust pce_fast demo cdplay
 Opening lockfile...
Multiple instances of Mednafen using the same base directory should not run simultaneously, otherwise settings file changes may be lost, along with other similar problems. If you understand the risks, and want to anyway, run Mednafen with environment variable "MEDNAFEN_ALLOWMULTI" set to "1" to bypass this check.

GBA likely doesn't have GS code support, because it appears GS codes on the GBA were all "encrypted", so most codes found on the internet that most users would find and use would need to be "decrypted" into a "RAW" format, then that "RAW" format would have to then be interpreted into mednafen's own cheat format to support them (same deal for Codebreaker codes on GBA), and having to implement the code decryption process is probably more than the mednafen developer can be bothered with.

Finding documentation on how these codes are decoded into RAW form in the first place might also be hard. I didn't dig very deeply, but the 'ole reliable professional gameshark hacking guide didn't have any info on how to encrypt or decrypt codes, and just linked to a program (makes sense, thats all you'd need if you're making your own codes, which the guide is for).

On gamehacking.org there are available gba code compatible and working with mednafen.
