Bad audio stutter on certain SNES games when using HDMI to an AVR or soundbar [message #6870] Fri, 07 April 2023 12:33 Go to next message

Hello,

For certain Super Famicom/SNES games, there is a very bad audio stutter when emulating via HDMI to either an audio-video receiver (AVR), pre-amp/processor for a stereo system, or sound bar. The titles that I have found so far are:

Super Mario World (U)
Donkey Kong Country games

The problem can be heard in the video posted here (starting at ~19 seconds):

https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/29118/audio-stutter-in-some-snes-games-on-surround-receiver

Though it doesn't seem to be a problem with mendafen (as other emulators exhibit the same stuttering), I was wondering if there are any settings or workarounds that could be applied?

So far, the only solution that I have found is to temporarily bypass my home theatre system's pre-amp/processor when playing these games and instead connect the computer directly to the TV via HDMI. If I do that, the audio is fine. Obviously, though, it's not ideal since the sound then is only coming from the sub-par TV speakers.

I would like to find the true cause of the problem with these certain games, and troubleshoot.

Thank you for your time.

Cheers,
Nathan Zachary

Like you said, this can't be a mednafen problem. I'm not sure how you're "breaking off" the audio from the HDMI to send it to your sound system, but its got to be the source of your problem, since you don't have that problem when you connect to your TV directly. I'd just HDMI to your TV directly, then use analog audio out connected to your sound system separately from your HDMI connection. Might complicate your setup tho Razz
